How to Biohack Your Way to Better Skin and Healthier Aging

The term biohacking gets tossed around a lot lately, but in aesthetics, it’s less about futuristic gadgets and more about finding innovative, science-backed ways to help your body perform (and age) better. From NAD+ supplements to hormone balancing and peptide therapy, the trend is taking over dermatology and wellness clinics for good reason: it’s about longevity from the inside out.

Why NAD+ Is at the Center of the Biohacking Boom

At the center of the biohacking movement is NAD+, a molecule found in every cell of the body that helps convert nutrients into energy, repair DNA and regulate the genes linked to aging. “It’s one of the easiest biohacks to start with,” says Chicago dermatologist Jessie Cheung, MD. “NAD+ helps with energy production, DNA repair and our longevity genes—it’s about living better with a longer health span.”

While NAD+ itself isn’t easily absorbed when taken orally, its precursors, NMN or NR, are better options for supplementation. “If you take NAD as a pill, it breaks down in your gut,” explains Dr. Cheung. “That’s why most people take NMN or NR. IV infusions are like a reset button, but for daily longevity benefits, I prefer oral or liposomal NMN.”

Can NAD+ Work Topically?

You’ve probably seen NAD+ on skin-care labels lately. Dr. Cheung says topical versions help fuel your skin’s mitochondria, the tiny energy centers in each cell that drive repair and renewal. “Think of it as fueling your skin from the surface,” she explains. “It supports barrier function and helps calm inflammation, even if the NAD+ molecule itself is too large to penetrate the skin.”

Why NAD+ Is Being Paired With GLP-1s

Telehealth providers now frequently pair NAD+ injections with GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide. The combination works synergistically—GLP-1s help reduce inflammation and regulate blood sugar, while NAD+ supports energy production and cellular repair. “They complement each other,” says Dr. Cheung. “But dosing matters, as too much NAD+ can shock the system, so it’s important to work with a knowledgeable provider.”

She also emphasizes supporting the body’s methylation pathways, the chemical processes that help detoxify and recycle NAD+. “When you take NAD, you use up your B vitamins,” she notes. “You need methylated B vitamins to keep that system running smoothly.”

Hormones and Peptides: The Next Layer of Longevity

Beyond supplements, hormone optimization and peptide therapy are becoming core tools in the longevity toolkit. “Hormones are foundational,” says Dr. Cheung. “They affect energy, muscle, bone and metabolism. You don’t have to wait until menopause to start balancing them.”

Peptides, short chains of amino acids that act as cell messengers, work in similar, targeted ways. “Some boost metabolism, some help skin, some support brain and joint health,” she adds. “Even GLP-1s are peptides. They’ve shown incredible effects on inflammation and metabolic wellness.”

The Simplest Biohack of All

Even with all the advanced options available, Dr. Cheung says the cheapest, most effective biohack doesn’t cost a thing: sleep. “When we sleep, our brains detox and our cells regenerate,” she says. “Stress, on the other hand, is the biggest thing aging us. Disconnect, turn off notifications and give your body a chance to repair.”
